The Gates of the Arctic Caribou Cabin

Nature's Crossroads - The Continental Divide.

A 50-minute flight brings you 100 miles north of Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge to Nature's Crossroads- the Continental Divide. Rivers south of the Divide flow into the Yukon River and eventually the Bering Sea, while rivers to the north flow into the Arctic Ocean.

Experience the incredible vastness of open tundra as you journey above tree line into the land of the caribou. August offers a chance to see the Western Arctic Caribou Herd migrating through the blazing fall colors. The population of this herd alone, over 500,000, approaches the human population of the entire state.

Located 120 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the Gates of the Arctic Caribou Cabin overlooks a lake that is ice-free only ten weeks out of the year, although daytime temperatures average in the mid 60's during July and August.

The sleeping cabin is a three-room bunkhouse built out of cedar logs with a panoramic view of the Alatna Valley. It accommodates two per room with a separate cookhouse, bathhouse and privy out back. A wood stove and thermostat-controlled heating system warms cool August nights, while a wind-powered generator brings light into each room. Situated far above timberline, even firewood must make a 100-mile journey.
While it is possible to make a day's hike of 8-10 miles, the openness of the tundra region allows for incredible wildlife viewing right off the front porch.

Day Two: Kobuk River Shee Fishing Whirlwind Adventure, Overnight at Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge

Begin the day with a 45-minute flight to the Kobuk River, slow-moving and 100 yards across in most places, it is home of the mighty Sheefish. Your privately-chartered floatplane flight covers 80 miles of sparkling rivers, lakes and rugged mountains before landing within a few feet of the fishing hole. You will gear up on the gravel bar while your guide inflates a small raft and describes how to tackle the "Tarpon of the North." This nickname comes from the fish's propensity to leap in the air once hooked in the meandering waters of the Kobuk River. Sheefish, also known as Inconnu, range from 20-50 pounds and are caught on heavy, sinking flies and large, flashy spinners. They begin spawning in mid to late July in the Kobuk River, so best fishing times are early August to mid-September. This is one of the best kept sport fish secrets of the north, combining superb fishing, clean water and stunning scenery. The day ends with your return flight to Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge where hot showers and cold drinks await.

Day Three: Wild and Scenic Float Trip Whirlwind Adventure, Overnight at Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge

More hiking, canoeing, birding or fishing for grayling and lake trout. As always the covered porch is available for those simply too overwhelmed by the beauty of it all to move.
